Hoyt Rogers’ new novel, “Sailing to Noon,” transports readers to the lush and vibrant Caribbean, capturing the magic realism and colorful lives of its characters. This first volume of The Caribbean Trilogy introduces us to Chiara, a world traveler who becomes enchanted by the mystical island of Canuba.
Chiara, despite her extensive travels, is captivated by Canuba, where the everyday blends seamlessly with the extraordinary. Her pansexual lover, Amado, guides her through the island’s diverse culture, natural wonders, and lively sensuality. As Chiara delves deeper into the island’s enchantment, she soon realizes that paradise has its shadows, presenting her with unexpected challenges.
“Sailing to Noon” has garnered high praise from literary figures:
- Jonathan Galassi: “It has enormous vitality and texture: it is a big performance—the epic myth of Canuba.”
- Siri Hustvedt: “I really felt this book: I entered its geography, saw and smelled and moved in it, which is a tribute to its vivid intimacy.”
- Edmund White: “You should put this book in a tightly sealed drawer; otherwise it’s so alive it might run away.”
This captivating novel is just the beginning of The Caribbean Trilogy, to be followed by “Midnight at Sea” and “Return to Day.” A sequel, “The Caribbean Farewell,” is also in the works, promising readers an extended journey into this enchanting world.
